Something similar happened to me.
There was a time when I thought I was having trouble finding the "sweet spot" while panning.
It turned out the left side of my headphones was dying. (º - º)

That sounds frusterating to try and figure that out. I knew mine were dying because the audio kept getting super clipped out.
